Is He Safe?

In the book, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” anticipation grows as the kids imagine meeting Aslan.  Susan, upon finding out that Aslan is not a man, but a lion, puts forth an obvious question, “Is he safe?”
““Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
How can one find comfort in that answer?
Everyone knows that a lion cannot be tamed. That truth implies unpredictable behavior. At first glance the beauty draws us in only to find ourselves fleeing in fear. The serene stillness is broken by the sudden movement of a massive creature lurching with power to keep order in the kingdom.
What purpose lies behind standing before such a beautiful yet feared beast? He’s not safe.
But he’s good.
He’s not able to be tamed.
But he’s good.
His actions are to protect us. And sometimes, in our human understanding, we grieve them.
But he’s good.
“Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? 10“Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? 11“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! (Matthew 7:9-11)
He’s a good, good, Father.
